Step 4: Maths
Rang 6 carried out a survey involving all classes in our school and each pupil's means of transport to school each day. They designed the survey and then, due to Covid 19 restrictions currently in place, they invited all classes to go in their PODS to their designated lining up areas in our school yards. The survey was carried out here in the outdoors. The results were then collated by Rang 6 in their class pods using our Chromebooks and the results were presented by one member of each pod to the class. The 'camera crew' videoed each presentation and these were then posted on our website for the rest of the classes to view and discuss the findings.

'It's a photo of a woodpecker which is living down near our granddad's house. He first heard him out in the trees and then he started coming in around the porch to the bird feeder. We found out they are fairly rare so we're lucky to see him when we call down to our Granddad's. Hope you can make him out in the centre of the photo.' Kate Rang 4
We certainly can, Kate. What a discovery!! Thanks for sharing it with us.

Thanks to Luke in Junior Infants for sharing his Farm Safety Poster with us. The messages are very important, especially at this time of year. Well done Luke.
Two lovely photos from Kate (Rang 3).
Kate says, 'I found these wild flowers called Fairy Foxglove on a bridge down the road from my house . I decided to bring them home and give them water.'
Thanks for sharing, Kate.

Thanks for sharing, Kate.
Ruaidhrí in Junior Infants crafted these butterflies and decorated them with wild flowers and leaves. Very artistic, Ruaidhrí. Well done.
Surrounded by Flowers: Kate [R4] and her brother, Tom [R1], were busy snapping on their walk today. Can you name the wild flowers? Thanks Kate and Tom!
See how many of you can recognise this fine young man from Junior Infants on a wild flower hunt.
Well done F and thank you for sharing your photo collage with us. It's our first collage. A great idea!
Do you know this young lady from Junior Infants?? She's surrounded by beautiful flowers. Well done E! You're a true scientist and nature spotter! And you're wearing your bicycle helmet too!! Very safety conscious. Thank you for the fantastic photos.
Brothers, Dylan and Fionn Condon sent us these brilliant bee style views of flowers on their nature stroll. The Ivy berries are darkening to their final black colour. Wood pigeons' favourite take-away! I love the Wall Flowers. Well done boys!
Two great shots from Kayla Walsh and her brother, Aaron. Can you name these wild flowers? How many can you see? Look closely. Thanks Aaron and Kayla!
Can you recognise this gardener from Senior Infants? Can you guess what he's growing? You must be using some strong fertiliser J!! Thanks for sharing your photos.
Did you find any new wild flowers on your walk?

Make Your Own Rainbow
What you'll need:
Instructions:
What's happening?
While you normally see a rainbow as an arc of colour in the sky, they can also form in other situations. You may have seen a rainbow in a water fountain or in the mist of a waterfall and you can even make your own such as you did in this experiment.
Rainbows form in the sky when sunlight refracts (bends) as it passes through raindrops, it acts in the same way when it passes through your glass of water. The sunlight refracts, separating it into the colours red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.
Make Your Own Rainbow
What you'll need:
- A glass of water (about three quarters full)
- White paper
- A sunny day
Instructions:
- Take the glass of water and paper to a part of the room with sunlight (near a window is good).
- Hold the glass of water (being careful not to spill it) above the paper and watch as sunlight passes through the glass of water, refracts (bends) and forms a rainbow of colours on your sheet of paper.
- Try holding the glass of water at different heights and angles to see if it has a different effect.

"Factories of the Future" Competition
What is CONFIRM?CONFIRM is a Smart Manufacturing research centre based at the University of Limerick and funded by Science Foundation Ireland. To put it simply, our research looks at ways we can improve the manufacturing process from start to finish through the use of cutting edge technologies like the Internet of Things, intelligent sensors, artificial intelligence & robotics (click any of these for a short video to explain what they are.)
Our research will change the future of manufacturing both in Ireland and the rest of world. These changes will not only effect the manufacturing process but will also change the way factories work, how they look and the jobs that people have within them!
To get started, watch our video below to find out how manufacturing has changed over the years
https://confirm.ie/future_competition/
We want to hear from YOU! What do you think the Factories of the Future will be like....
How do I Enter?
Click below for instructions!
STEP 1: Get permission from your parent/guardian to make sure it is ok to enter and ask them to carefully read the Terms & Conditions at the end of this page.
STEP 2: Make sure to watch our video at the top of this page about how factories have changed since the 1st Industrial Revolution right up to now (this will help you to get some ideas)
STEP 3: Use the internet to find out a little bit more about the technologies being used in Industry 4.0. You can use the CONFIRM website (https://www.confirm.ie) or any other sources you like! Make sure to wrtie down notes on what you find out to help you in the next step (HINT: search for things like – “Industry 4.0”, “Smart Manufacturing technology”, “factory of the future”)
STEP 4: Use your imagination to visualise what you think the factory of the future would be like. BE AS CREATIVE AS YOU CAN! You can even use something that doesn’t exist yet in real life in your factory (like time travel) Use the following list of questions as a guide to help you:
IMPORTANT NOTE: To upload your entry using the Google form at the following link, you may be asked to sign in to your Google Account. This is normal and is solely for the purpose of allowing you to upload photos, videos of your entry and does not collect any personal information.

- Will the factory be bigger or smaller than the ones we have today?
- Will the factories look the same as the ones you found on the internet?
- What kind of machines or technology will be used in the factory?
- Will people still work there or will the workers be robots/machines?
- Where will the factories be?
- Will there be pollution coming from the factories? How will they effect the environment?
- One labelled drawing or 30 second video clip describing the outside of the factory – this should include it’s surroundings and show clearly what the building will look like and where it is (city, countryside, in space etc.)
- One labelled drawing or 30 second video clip describing the inside of the factory – this should show how the goods are being made, what types of technology are being used etc.
- A 100-200 word paragraph that describes the differences in the ways you think people will work in 100 years.
