Hi to all first and second class,
Well done on all the amazing work that you did last week. It is great to see you all engaging so well and the quality of work that you are uploading is very good. We know it is not an easy time but if you keep going as well as you are going you will all be brilliant by the time you get back to school. I look forward to hearing from you all this week.
If anybody is looking for extra reading material, there are many online resources that have free trials at the moment. One of the websites that has a free 30 day trial is readingeggs.com ... It might be worth a look if you haven't much reading material left at home.
If you need any help with anything please do send me a message on seesaw or an e mail. I am available all day to help you with anything. Please direct any queries this week to Ms. Murphy at [email protected]
Enjoy the week.

Hi Everyone,
Hope you are all keeping well. It's unfortunately not looking good for our return to school on February 1st. We will just have to wait and see what the Government will say on Tuesday. There's just a few little things on our timetable this week:
Firstly, the 1st class pupils are finished their current English reader and moving onto a new reader this week. All the new readers are in school (we didn't think we would be out of school this long) so the link for the new reader will be put up on Seesaw for this week and pupils can read it online. Both myself and Ms. Murphy will head into school some day the end of this week and give out the new readers. We will email you with a time once we know what day we are going in. If you need to collect any other books just drop me an email and I will get those ready also.
We know some people are finding it difficult to get all tasks complete and uploaded on Seesaw everyday due to a number of reasons. The last thing we want is for people to be put under pressure so in order to ease this stress a bit we have decided to pick 2 subjects per day that we want you to upload. If everyone is uploading the same two areas we will be able to get a greater idea of how the class is progressing as a whole. We will highlight the subjects we want you to upload everyday on our timetable.
We hope everyone is finding the work ok and are finding Seesaw helpful. If you are finding the Irish difficult please bear in mind that it takes lots of repetition and oral work to develop...so please don't worry. Break it down into smaller parts, listen to the videos a few times, focus on maybe 2 of the questions instead of the whole lot. If we were in school we'd be doing lots of interactive games and activities to reinforce new words and phrases. A lot of the Irish curriculum is focused on oral work so the focus is on recognising words and using them in sentences.
Remember, all children learn at different paces and we need to keep encouraging them and telling them they are doing great. Thanks for enduring all these tough weeks online learning..we know it's not easy.
If you need any help just send an email.
Kind regards
Mary

Hi Everyone,
I hope this note finds you well. This is just a quick update to let you all know the plan for our online learning. A weekly timetable of our plan of work will be put up on the website every Monday morning. We will be covering English, Irish and Maths everyday along with one other subject area e.g. History on a Monday, Geography on a Tuesday, etc.
It is important to view this plan as it will have all the main details and instructions for the children. It will also advise on whether you will have to view videos etc on Seesaw. Most of the work is related to the children’s own books so there will be no need to worry about printing sheets etc
In relation to sending work back for correction we would ask children to pick out one piece of work they did that day (maybe something they are proud of or something they worked really hard on) and upload that piece onto Seesaw before the end of the school day.
The answers for Master Your Maths will also be put up on Seesaw at 3pm every day for children to view and self correct.
This online learning is still very new to everyone and will require a bit of patience and perseverance from us all so don’t worry if things don’t go according to plan all the time. We can only do our best. Hopefully things will run fairly smoothly!
If correspondence needs to be made this week could it be made to Ms. Roche please.
Take care.
Regards Ms. Roche

Hi Everybody,
I hope you are all keeping really well. Our summer holidays are just around the corner! We have attached another ‘active timetable’ for this week with some new activities and ideas which we hope you will enjoy. Again, if there are some books that you would like to finish off please feel free to do so but again there is no pressure to do this.
Please mind your English book rental books and novels over the summer and keep them in a safe place until we return in September.
Just want to say how proud we are of you all over the past couple of months in how you have dealt with this unusual situation and the great effort you have put in to everything. We hope you have a very enjoyable summer.. you all deserve it!
See you all in September.
Take care
Ms. Roche and Ms. Murphy
If you would like to send on some pictures of your active week please forward them to Mary [email protected]

Hi to all In 1st Class.
I'm sure you are all glad to hear that we are finally on the home stretch and we are finishing up on the academic work. You have all done such an amazing job over the last few months by keeping up with school work and sending in work to both teachers. We feel it is time to have a few enjoyable days before the holidays as we would every year.
Please note, for the final two weeks we will change the settings on See Saw so that if you do send in any pictures that other children may be able to see them. If you do see pictures from any body else please do not comment on them. You may however' like' them if you wish. If you want to send pictures privately to teacher please do so by e mail as usual There is no pressure at all to send pictures.
No academic work is set this week but if any body wants to continue with handwritng, the last chapter in Maths etc do feel free. As a school, we are trying, for the last two weeks, to have all classes doing similar themed work every day to make it easier for families.Feel free to pick and choose activities to suit your family situation.
Enjoy the down time and have a lovely week. Ms. Murphy and Ms.Roche
If you are sending anything on this week please direct it to Ms. Murphy at [email protected]

Hi Everybody,
I hope everyone is keeping well. You will be glad to know that we will begin to taper off with our workload from next week – so this week will probably be our last academic week. We are hoping to do more activity based tasks for the last couple of weeks of school.. more information will be given on this in our email next week.
We are aware that some books aren’t finished and some topics have yet to be covered, but rest assured, we will be going back over these strands next year and we will cover them then. If children would like to finish off their grammar and handwriting books, they can do so if they wish – but there is no pressure whatsoever in completing it. We understand that every situation at home is different so only finish them if you feel you want a little extra work.
I hope you all have a lovely week.
Take care
Ms. Roche
Can all emails be directed to Mary this week [email protected] , thanks.

Hi to all in 1st class. I hope you had a really lovely weekend and enjoyed all that the sunshine had to offer. At least we had a long weekend to enjoy it. Unfortunately it has to end sometime but we will try to keep going for another week or two and then ease off on the school work! As always, everything that we set is a suggested list of work and please do not feel under pressure to complete everything, We, as teachers, are just trying to cater for everybody.
There will be two short videos on Seesaw on Thursday and Friday to assist with the new maths concepts if you wish to look at them. Again, this is only optional. Please note that the videos may appear in the journal section or the activities section depending on how and when I upload them. If anybody has any issues accessing them please e mail and let me know. I hope you all have a lovely short week. All e mails this week can be directed to Liz on [email protected].
Have a great week, I miss you all.

Hi Everyone,
I hope you are all keeping well. Restrictions have started to lift so that’s a positive sign. Just a quick couple of things… we are not giving any work for Friday as this was a planned school closure. There are a couple of Maths tutorials related to the topic we are doing this week on See Saw if you would like to log and have a look.. This can be done using your codes that were sent out last week. There is no pressure in logging in. It’s there as an added extra and may come in handy in case you are having difficulty with our topic this week. I hope everyone has a good week.
Keep safe and well,
Mary

Hi Everybody,
We hope you had a really lovely weekend and that you got out and enjoyed the lovely weather that we are having. We are including the work for next week but please,as always, remember that this is just a suggestion or a menu that you can choose from. We are always aware that everybody is in a different home situation and with the easing of restrictions more people may be going back to work so please don't put yourselves under undue pressure. We have really enjoyed receiving e mails from the children with their work and they are truly doing a great job. We love to see your work so do feel free to continue to send us pictures of a few of your favourite pieces of work from the week if you wish.
We will do simple maths tutorials for some of the new concepts on Seesaw next week so if we don't have an e mail address for you please send it to us if you would like to see the tutorials. We will set you up on Seesaw over the coming two weeks. This is completely optional and only use it if you feel the short tutorials will assist you to help your child with maths. We will keep it very simple but mainly we will continue with the usual system of weekly work on the website as always, as it seems to be working well.
A big hello to all the children in 1st class and we hope that you are all staying safe and well at this time. We miss you all.

Hi Everybody,
Hope everyone is keeping well these days. As you are already aware we unfortunately won’t get to return to our classroom before the summer break. It’s very disappointing for everyone but all we can do is remain positive and keep doing what we are doing. Again, I just want to stress that the work we are giving is completely optional and we are not putting pressure on anybody to get work complete.
We are going to do the Irish layout the same as last week (instructions on how to access it are at the bottom of the timetable attached). We have loved receiving your emails and screenshots over the past couple of weeks so please keep them coming…it can be anything you like….it could be something as simple as a piece of your written work you are proud of in English or an art project you completed. It would be lovely to see how you are getting on with your writing and your sentences…and try not to forget your capital letters and full stops!
Can all emails be directed to Ms. Roche this week [email protected].
Have a lovely week and keep safe everybody!

Hello Everybody,
We hope this e mail finds you safe and well and that you all enjoyed the long weekend with your families. We know it's been a long time since we have all seen each other and you are definitely missing your friends by now so hopefully next week we might write some letters to our friends. The work we are including for this week once again is only a suggestion and by no means feel under pressure to complete it. As always we understand that each family has different facilities for learning at home and others have various family commitments. We loved hearing from you and seeing all your lovely work over the last two weeks so keep in contact with us. It's so nice to keep the lines of communication open to all of you.
In first class we use Bua Na Cainte 1 which is published by Edco. The online tools for edco are difficult to access and the whole file has to be downloaded to ensure access to the website. It's a very big file and also you need very good internet to download it. Because of this we have not been able to download it . We discussed the best way forward with this situation as we would love you to be able to listen to and engage more with the Irish language. What we have decided to do for this week is use a different scheme using Folens books. We are still covering the same topic that we had in our plans for the month of May, just from a different book/company. This is how to access the site and the lesson.
1. www.folensonline.ie
2. Register as a teacher
3.FIll in the form with your name, e mail, password and roll number= Prim20
4.You will receive an e mail to activate your account or it may just allow you to access from the screen there and then.
5. You should now be logged in.
6. Go to the library and select Abair Liom C
7.Select resources
8.Select lesson 23 Ag Ceannach Sú ( make sure that you only choose one lesson , otherwise you may have to navigate through pages to find it) OR type in Comhrá , Ag ceannach sú in the search box.
9. Once you see 'Comhrá- Ag ceannach sú' click into it and listen to the comhrá.
We will see how it goes this week and you can let us know if you have any problems.
Please direct e mails this week to Liz at [email protected]

Additional information for 1st class parents for April 27th - May 1st
Hello everybody, hope you all are keeping well and enjoying the lovely weather we are having these days. Please find attached some work for the coming week. Again parents, please note this is only suggested work and is completely optional. Do not feel any pressure to get everything/ anything done as we know everybody’s circumstances are different. Do what you feel you can and continue to learn and enjoy the outdoors too.
Just a reminder that our school email addresses are [email protected] and [email protected] and if all emails could be directed to Mary for this week. Thanks. We would love to see screenshots of some of your favourite work that you have completed and see how you are getting on. I then will be able to give you some feedback by the end of the week… again this is completely optional and there is no pressure whatsoever.
Also, if you are stuck for reading at home, there is a very good levelled reading scheme online called ‘PM Readers’. If you google PM reading collections for free it should come up. There is a 30 day free trial on at the moment and we would highly recommend it. It is a very similar levelled reading scheme to the one we use in school. Just to let you know however, it can be a little tricky to set up but once you have signed in the child can navigate to find the level of reading they are at and continue to move up through the levels.
Finally, we are aware that we asked pupils to complete week 26 test in Master Your Maths last week but forgot to ask them to complete the daily tasks (Monday to Thursday)… our mistake! So we are not going to move onto week 27 until next week as we want everyone to be on the same week and give a chance to those who want to catch up on week 26 tasks.
Hope you all have a lovely week and get lots of vitamin D from the wonderful sunshine we are having!
Talk soon

Hi to everybody in 1st class. We really miss you all and would have loved to hear all your stories about your Easter holidays! We hope you had a relaxing time off and that you are all staying safe with your families. We are sending on some work for this week to keep you busy!! Parents please note this is only suggested work and as always it is completely optional.. We understand every household is in a difficult situation at this time and we do not want to over-burden you.
Please feel free to e mail us at our school addresses which are [email protected] and [email protected]. If you have any questions or queries please don't hesitate to contact us.
We would also appreciate if you could send us your e mail addresses so that in the coming weeks if we need to contact you re. any work, that we have an open line of communication available between us as teachers and you as parents. Again this is completely optional and only do so if you wish.
If you would like to forward a few pieces of work to us that your child has completed this week please feel free to take a screen shot of it and e mail it to us and we will give feedback on the work that your child has completed Some of you may feel this might help with getting your child to engage in learning again after the holidays. However, we do understand the necessity to keep screen time limited and also the difficulties around devices and internet access so this is just an option for those of you who feel it would be beneficial to your childs' learning at this unusual time.
Please direct e mails to Liz ( [email protected]) this week.
We would love to hear how you are all getting on. Trust that we really do miss you all and we know that you all miss each other too. Hopefully we will all meet again soon but in the meantime keep safe and remember to be nice and helpful to your parents as these are difficult times for them too.

Additional information for 1st class parents for March 23rd-27th.
HI to all in 1st class and their parents. I hope you are all safe and well and not missing school too much! I'm sure you are all doing a little bit of work from home and also having some fun. Remember the work is just a suggestion as is anything in this post. Just a few points for you to note for the coming week.
English
Gill Explore have opened their website for free access to parents and students at the moment. This is the website that we as teachers use daily as we teach English. Please feel free to go to www.gillexplore.ie and go to the menu. Scroll down to products and all available books will be displayed. Choose primary titles/ English and 1st Class to be directed to the skills book that we use. When you click on the skills book it allows you to hear the story that the children are currently reading out loud. ( Spring Picnic)
If you choose unit 14 you can access the oral language and interactive resources for this story which would be beneficial for your children Also, there is a wealth of resources linked with the story and the theme of spring in both the differentiation section and the literacy stations section. Children could spend some time on completing some of the phonics, cloze, comprehension, grammar or extension activities. Talk to the children about all the new vocabulary and phrases and put them in sentences also.
As we are studying procedural writing at the moment anyone who feels their child needs some practice with writing they could write out a recipe for 'Making Rice Krispie Buns' . Please use these headings,
1.Title,
2.Ingredients
3. What you will need
4. Method ( done out in points)
Any practice at all that the children get in writing procedures for recipes, art projects etc will be very helpful as this is the genre of writing that we are studying at the moment.
To assist with oral language at this time you can go into unit 14 oral language poster. Discuss the poster and use all the tools available to to zoom in, discuss what's happening, develop vocabulary etc. If you click on the question icon it will help you to direct questions to your child.
Anybody who would like extra work in phonics or comprehension could also use some of the other titles belonging to Gill Explore also.
Also remember that free writing is also very beneficial to all children. If the children know what a full sentence is and where to use capital letters and full stops when they come back it would help them greatly. The children should remember how to write a narrative story and all practice is beneficial.
Gaeilge
Unfortunately I didn't send home the children’s' Irish books but www.edcolearning.ie/login have also opened up their website to allow parents and children to access it. The user name is primaryedcobooks and the password is edco2020. This is the website that we use for Bua Na Cainte. Unfortunately they don't seem to have allowed access to their interactive activities which is a big part of what the children do everyday. However, if you go into the resources section you can see a lot of the vocabulary with pictures and their book is also online. You could do the following conversation with your child:
Q: An bhfuil peata agat? ( do you have a pet?)
A: Tá peata agam/Níl peata agam.
Q: Cén saghas peata é? ( What sort of pet is it?)
A: Is madra/cat/iasc é ( it's a dog, cat, fish etc)
Q: Cé a thug an peata duit? ( who gave you the pet?)
A: Thug .................. an peata dom . ( ..... gave me the pet)
The children can also be encouraged to discuss ' An Nuacht' ( The News)
Example:Inniu an Luan ( Today is Monday etc)
Inné an Domhnach ( Yesterday was Sunday)
Amárach an Mháirt ( Tomorrow is Tuesday)
Tá an ghrian ag taitneamh etc.
Tá peata agam/Níl peata agam.
Any little bit of Gaeilge that you use throughout the day will help keep the language alive for the children.
Maths:
Folensonline have also apparently opened up their website but for some reason I could not access it. Perhaps others may have better luck. If you manage to get into it there is plenty of work in the satellite book for Planet Maths 1 that children could do up to what we have already covered. If you cannot access folensonline, there is a wealth of maths sheet available on twinkle that will cover topics that we have already covered in class. Also www.topmarks.co.uk have excellent online games for all age groups. We regularly use these in class to help with topics being covered. For the last fortnight we have been working on weight and capacity but the topics weren't fully finished when we closed. Any weighing, measuring or baking would tie in well. In first class we learn 1kg and 1litre. It is important that the children know that kg is for weight and litres are for capacity. Measure out a litre and try filling up different containers with a litre.. do all litre containers look the same? What holds more or less than a litre or what weighs more or less than a litre? It's very hands on maths so give them a scales or a few containers and do some measuring. Any revision on subtraction, patterns and numbers on the hundred square and tens and units is also very beneficial to the children. Remember to keep up the Master Your Maths if possible.
SESE
We have been planning on working with the children on Kahoot. This is a digital quiz that you can make yourself and the children can play it with other people. Perhaps you could make and play a quiz about Mexico and Australia There in plenty of information in the children’s' books about Australia and Mexico and some of you may be doing a project on Australia which I look forward to seeing. There are plenty of PowerPoints on Twinkle for Australia which would be interesting also.
For the coming week it it was also planned to teach transparent, opaque and translucent. Perhaps the children could go on a hunt around the house for some materials and objects and then use a torch or go by a sunny window to test them once the meanings of the words are explained to them. They could make three boxes and label them, one for transparent objects etc. Draws pictures of the objects and label them.
Don't forget to practice the recorder also as the children have picked up so much this year it would be a shame to forget it all.
If I could also ask that children don't go ahead in their books or reader unless we have said to as this could be very disruptive when we get back to school. We will advise you as time passes and who knows we may be back before Easter!!!!
Keep reading reading reading.....it is always beneficial. ( Worldbookonline is free to all at the moment too)
Everything above, of course are only suggestions for you. Please do not feel pressure to get everything/anything done as we realise that everybody’s' circumstances are different. Do what you feel you can and enjoy and learn in the outdoors too.
I will guide you further next week as to where to go from here.
Keep safe everybody and we hope to see you really soon.
Ms. Murphy and Ms. Roche
