Hello to all my 5th class girls and 6th class girls and boys, and to your parents too.
Firstly, I want to say a big well done and thank you to those of you who did so well with learning from home over the weeks since schools were closed. I know lots of you (and your parents) worked hard to keep up a bit of school work as well as the other valuable activities you were doing at home and I loved receiving emails from you and updates on Seesaw.
I hope you all enjoyed the activities last week, I was delighted to get some photographic evidence of your endeavours, thanks to those who sent me pics!
For your final week there's some more fun activities for you to try out. Give them a go and let me know how you get on! ( Activities at end of message)

I am delighted to have the pleasure of teaching you again next year! You should all have your booklists by now. Please do hold on to your 5th class maths book for recaps when we get back to school (plus any other books/copies I mention on the book list to carry forward to 6th class ). Have a brilliant summer and I look forward to seeing you back at school in September,
Kind wishes,
Ms. Siobhán Meehan

What a strange and unprecedented ending to your primary school years. It is certainly not the ending I would have liked and I'm sure you and your parents feel the same way. I hope you enjoy the slide show we are putting together commemorating your time in Scoil Lachtaín and we look forward to a time we can come together to celebrate your graduation from primary school in person.
Between now and then I want to say...Congratulations on completing your primary education! It is a big step forward in your lives; most of you have been in the same school, with the same classmates for the past eight years. Some of you will be going your separate ways but all of you can look forward to a new, exciting time in your life. Like anything new, you may feel unsure or a little bit worried or nervous about secondary school, but this is a natural reaction. Talk to your parents, older siblings or friends if you need to. Be yourself, enjoy meeting new people and experiencing new things. I'm including links below to some resources that may be useful to you and your parents as you transition from primary to secondary school.
Myself and all of your teachers and staff have some very fond memories of your time in Scoil Lachtaín and I hope you have too!
I wish you the very best as you embark on your secondary school journey,
Kindest wishes,
Ms. Siobhán Meehan

Hello 6th class, I'm trying to get the slideshow together. I've received photos and written work from about half of you so far. Thanks to those people. I will accept pics and written items until Tuesday and what I have by then will be what's included in the slideshow. Please email me your photos and type up and email me your written pieces ( I got some lovely handwritten pieces but unfortunately you can't read them in a slideshow so type them up please with your name at the end).
Also, if you have any suggestions for suitable music/songs as background music, let me know asap! Thanks
5th and 6th Class
You'll be delighted to know that for the last two weeks your school assignments will be based around fun, creative and sports activities.
Monday 15th - Friday 19th June
Each day this week I want you to choose 3 activities (you can do more if you like!) from the table below and complete them. You can repeat the same activity again on another day but aim to complete ten DIFFERENT activities by the end of the week. Don't forget to send in some photos (either on Seesaw or by email) of your creations or of you completing the tasks. I'd love to see what you get up to!
Enjoy!

You all have your books at home now and there's a few bits and pieces I'd like you to continue with over the next fortnight. As always, you should be doing between one and a half hours and two hours of academic work each weekday (mornings are the best time to work) in order to prepare for next year.
After that, continue to help out at home and get outside and make the most of the weather.
I look forward to hearing from you all soon,

Graduation
1. As I mentioned before, I want you to send me in some pics of you throughout your primary school years. They don't have to be photos taken in school or even in your school uniform. Please email them to me at [email protected] before Wednesday 10th June.
2. In addition to your photos I would also like you to contribute a piece of written work . Below is a list of 11 topics you can choose from. Please choose between 3 and 5 of the topics below (the ones you remember most about!) and write between half and a full page on each. You can type it and email it to me, or hand write it - beautifully of course! - and take a pic and email it to me before Friday 12th June. I'll be putting these together to produce a slide show that will go on our school website to celebrate your time in Scoil Lachtain so get them in if you want to be included.

SeeSaw
I'm happy to share with you that our class will be using Seesaw (http://seesaw.me), a secure online journal where students can document and reflect on what they are learning in class. Your child will be able to add the things we work on (including photos, videos, worksheets, drawings and voice recordings) to their Seesaw journal and share them with me.
In order for your child to use Seesaw, the app needs your child’s name to be able to associate work like their photos, videos or voice recordings with their account. Seesaw only uses this information to provide the service and doesn’t advertise in Seesaw, create profiles of students, or share or sell your child’s personal information or journal content. You can read more about their strong privacy promises here: https://web.seesaw.me/privacy.
I hope that your child will enjoy using Seesaw to document and share their learning.
If you DO NOT consent to your child using SeeSaw please notify me by email on [email protected]

Hello everyone,
I hope ye're all well.
I know ye have plenty of work to keep you busy for this week but I will be emailing you out passwords to access See Saw during the week so keep an eye on the email account you have used to contact me.
I haven't posted you any activities on See Saw as yet but I'd like you to use your code to make sure you are able to log in. In the future you should be able to see activities I've set for you and hopefully some videos that may help you with maths. Straight away you'll be able to send me on any work you've done on SeeSaw instead of sending it via email. Only I can see anything you send me, if you send me something I would like the class to see, I will contact you first to ask you.
To access SeeSaw:
1. Google SeeSaw (if you're using a tablet or a phone it might be handy to download the app)
2. When you get in, go to log in, then go to I'm a Student
3. Go down to Text Code and enter the code I will send you via email (you don't need to bother with "email and password" etc. This code will be valid for multiple uses. The code is personal to you and should only be used by you.
4. Press GO and you should open your own profile.
5. There's a green +Add button at the top where you can easily add photos, drawings, videos, or any other work you'd like to send me
6. You will find any messages from me in Messages/Inbox.
I'm asking you to Add something, I don't mind what ( a photo of some work, or a piece of art, or a question, or a picture of your dog even!), when you've logged in so I can see that your profile is working. If you have any problems with it send me an email.

I'd like to make a slide show to mark your time in Scoil Lachtain. Over the next few weeks I'll be asking you to submit a few pieces of writing I can use in it.
Use your free time this week to look up any photos you have of your time in primary school. Or if you have a photo of you from when you started school ( it doesn't have to be IN school or in uniform) and a recent photo to mark 6th class, email them on to me please.
School Passport
Every 6th class pupil in Ireland must submit a "passport" when moving on to secondary school. You will receive these over the next week. There will be a part for your parents to fill in and there will be a section for you to fill in. Please do think about and plan your answer before you write it (in your best handwriting!). It's not a test but you want to give a good impression!
The Passports must be returned to the school by 12th June and they will be sent on to each of your secondary schools with your school report.
Enjoy the bank holiday ahead and go out and enjoy the sunshine!

New Message from Ms. Meehan dated May 18th
Hello everybody,
I hope you and your families are keeping well. Tomorrow marks the beginning of the first phase of the lifting of restrictions so at least we can wander a bit further for our daily exercise and some of your parents may be returning to work. I do think it's so important though, that we don't lose the run of ourselves and end up back under lockdown again. Please, please maintain social distancing of 2 metres from anyone who doesn't live in your home.
I know we are all longing for things to go back to normal, little did we realise on that last Thursday at school that we'd still be missing the little things like hugging our grandparents or meeting up with our friends, going to the cinema or a hurling match. Dare I say, I even miss the shrill sound of the school bell! Hopefully, when we all come out the other side of this, we will have a new appreciation all of those little things we took for granted before.
For now though, please do keep up with some school work. I know that mams and dads might be very busy at home at the moment, so, again, 5th and 6th class pupils should be able to complete the majority of this work independently. As I said before, the skills of setting yourself targets and organising your own study time will be very useful, especially for secondary school.
I have really enjoyed the emails I have received so far. I have seen some excellent nature diaries and accompanying photos, some very interesting SESE projects, lovely letters of gratitude, píosaí Gaeilge, some beautiful art work, photos of delicious treats that would make your mouth water and some of you have excelled at gardening and DIY projects. Well done!
I am still setting up See Saw for our class. I will email you instructions on how to set it up at home as soon as I have it ready. I think it will be helpful for new maths topics.
Below you'll find curriculum work for the next two weeks. You are learning so much more at home and I'd love to hear about it, let me know via email.
Keep in touch and take care,
Ms Meehan

New Message from Ms. Meehan dated May 5th
Hello all,
I hope ye enjoyed the wonderful weather over the bank holiday weekend. Hopefully it will continue and we can make the most of our time outside with our families. As you know, the government will start to lift restrictions from next week on, but this will be a slow process so, for now, please, please stay with your families, within 2k of your homes.
I have loved receiving your emails filling me in on your news and the photos you've sent of work you've done, not just the "homework", but the more creative things ye've been doing to keep busy, have brightened my day so please keep them coming. Anyone who hasn't got around to doing it yet, it would be great if you could send me on an email address through which we can keep in touch ([email protected])
If you have any questions about work, or anything, please do email me and I'll do my best to help you. In the coming weeks I'll be trying out the "Seesaw" app to help with a few lessons and to keep in touch with eachother. I'll keep you posted on that.
For now I'm setting work for the next fortnight below (May 5th - May 15th). Again, the work is mostly from your books so minimal time online needed. You should also be able to complete the majority of it without your parents help. Please do try to work independently for 1-2 hours every day. These skills will be especially valuable for those of you going to secondary school next year as you will be expected to have the maturity and organisational skills to organise your own study routine.
I hope ye clicked into the link on the school website homepage for our staff message for May. It's all true, we really do miss ye!
Keep in contact and keep safe,
Ms. Meehan
Work for May 5th - May 15th (2 weeks)

Letter Writing
Over the next 2 weeks I would like you to choose a person or group who you think have been invaluable during these difficult times. It might be an obvious choice like a doctor or nurse, it may be a supermarket worker who has gone to work every day despite the risks, it may be a member of your community who is doing "meals-on-wheels" or helping those who are cocooning, it could be a garda. You can probably think of many more yourself. I would like you to write a letter of gratitude to that person, a real-life letter, and send it to them. This is something I would really like to see so if you can, please do email me on a pic of your letter.

If you can't think of anything you've done so far, use this week to start! Draw a picture of a flower in your garden, or your pet, or your dad at the laptop working from home, or the new calf; whatever interests you. Bake a cake or plant some seeds, be creative.

You have no excuse not to get out in this fabulous weather. Try to get at least an hour of good exercise every day. New Message from Ms. Meehan dated April 27th
Hello all,
I'm adding an attachment with the answers to Master Your Maths for 5th and 6th. It would be a good idea if you and one of your parents or older brothers or sisters went back over any week that hasn't been corrected up to Week 25 and checked your answers from this booklet.
Be honest in your corrections and go back and work out where you went wrong if you get an answer incorrect. Don't forget the importance of actually doing workings for your maths.
From next week on ye will start doing the Friday tests in MYM and I will correct them for you if you send them on to my email address. I'll give you more info on this next Monday. In the meantime, continue on with the fortnight's work I set last week. Please do email me if you have any questions or problems.
Thank you to the girls who have emakled me with work samples or just some news. I love hearing from you and look forward to hearing from more of you in the coming days.
Friday was a bit of a strange day, I was a bit sad thinking what a beautiful day it would have been for your Confirmation. It's completely normal to feel disappointed about the things that we're missing during lockdown but we must remember it will be worth it when we can get back to "normal" life safe and healthy.
I hope ye're all keeping well,
Ms Meehan

April 20th - May 1st
Rang 5 and 6
Hello all,
I hope ye all enjoyed a break for the Easter holidays, even if it was a very different holiday to usual. Hopefully all of this will make us appreciate the little things we took for granted before, like visiting our friends and relations, going to town, and even going to school (Heaven forbid)!
Parents,
I am acutely aware that every home is under different pressures at the moment and I certainly do not want to add to that load.
As your child is in 5th or 6th class, however, it is important they don't lose touch altogether with their school work. They should be able to complete the work I'm setting for them independently, and they should spend around 90 mins per day on it.
Most of the work I'm setting is from books they should have at home as I know internet isn't always dependable and I don't want children squabbling over tablets etc! Other websites etc that are in the "Links" section of the school website, of course can be used for any extra activities your child may like to complete.
I will set 2 weeks work at a time.
I can be contacted by email at [email protected]
I would love to see some of the work 5th and 6th have been doing at home and I would encourage you to email on a photo of their favourite piece of work each week so I can see how they've been getting on!
Fifth and Sixth Class,
I hope ye are all well. I'm sure ye're keeping busy, staying safe and doing your best to help out at home. I'd love to hear how ye're getting on, ye can always send me an email to [email protected] to let me know what you've been up to over the last 5 weeks, go on! I'll let ye know a little of what I've been doing below...
We have been so lucky with the beautiful weather over the last few weeks. We've been making the most of the sunshine in the garden and doing The Bodycoach Joe Wicks outside. Have ye tried out his free workouts?
We've also been baking (a lot!) and, as a result, eating (too much!).
I've have been taking Seán and Aoibhín for a walk up the fields every afternoon and it's amazing the things you can learn just by being observant! We've watched new calves being born and taking their first wobbly steps. We've seen how the mother cows are so protective of their babies and how they can recognise them by their smell. We've spotted hares and rabbits dashing through the fields. Last Thursday there was a mother fox and her two cubs on the lane! The mother noticed us first and scampered off but her two curious cubs stayed put until we were about 3 metres from them, they were adorable, rolling around and playing just like puppies would. Of course it was the one day I didn't have my phone to take a photo! We went back yesterday, phone in hand, but there was no sign. However, because we were being observant, we noticed a carcass of what I think was a rabbit in the grass beside the hole the foxes disappeared into. We also identified hare droppings close by.
With the fine weather, Spring has truly sprung and you'll find new buds and blossoms everywhere. The first butterflies are fluttering around and bumblebees are already busy. The birds that migrated in the late autumn have returned and you can hear them chattering and chirping in the trees and electricity wires every day. There's two buzzards that glide and circle in the sky in our area looking out for prey on the ground below. We've spotted robins, starlings, blackbirds, wrens, bullfinches and thrushes in the garden. All this is from being out in the garden and an hour's walk every day!
My husband and brother have built a poly-tunnel and we're deciding what fruit and veg to plant in it. It will be interesting to see how things grow in it.
As I said before, the learning experiences you are getting through helping out at home and spending time with your families are extremely valuable.
I urge you to make the most of this time at home and use it to learn about the world around you. If you live in the countryside take a walk in the fields or lanes around your house. If you live in the town, walk down to Millenium Park or Brown's Wood with your parents or brothers/sisters. Bring a copy and a phone to take pics. Open your eyes and really notice what you can see and hear in nature.
Work for 20th April - 1st May 2020
(2 Weeks)
I'm not too sure what copies you have at home at the moment but if you have a spare copy or one with plenty of space left in it, will you please put all further school work in it together (except Maths, keep that in your A4 hard-backed copy).
You should be able to complete the vast majority of the work below independently. Try to get back into a routine this week of setting yourself a time in the morning for your studies. You should spend approx 90 mins per day. There's a good list of websites in the "links" section of school website to keep ye busy if there's a rainy day.
SESE
1. Small World Geography & Science: go back over Unit 4: Plants and Unit 11: Animals, these will help you with your Nature Diary.

You can focus on one or two things, for example, the flowers that are growing in your garden or different species of birds you see around your home (you might need to look up their names), maybe choose a tree that is starting to bud and observe the changes in it over the month. Or you can keep a more general diary, as I have above. Write around 1 page per week (you might choose to write a few lines twice or three times a week)so you'll have 4 pages after the month. Take pics if you can and send them on to [email protected]

Hi everyone,
I hope you are all keeping safe in these strange times.
As we will not be returning to school for quite some time I am suggesting some work to keep you in touch with your education over the next few weeks.
I'm sure there's lots of things you're doing at home with your family that are extremely valuable to your development (gardening, helping out with chores/younger brothers and sisters, farming, cooking/baking, artwork, keeping in touch with grandparents (write them a letter and make their day!). These are so important so please keep them up.
As you are the senior classes of the school I strongly suggest you dedicate approximately 90mins to 2 hours to "school" education 4 days a week ( or an hour a day, 5 days a week). This does not include any "phone time" so leave it in another room!
This is not just " book work" as you will see as you read on.
Maths:
1.Please continue on with the next 5 weeks of Master Your Maths.
2. Go to Topmarks and test yourself on tables, fractions, multmultiplication and division. Take a look at 2D and 3D shapes on it too. Each day, try to beat yesterday's score.
English:
1. READ, READ, READ!
Look at the links section of the school website, there's a link to the Renaissance site with thousands of AR books free online.
2. Please try to get in some writing every day. Here's a few suggestions:
*Journal - keep a daily journal of your activities over the next few weeks.
*Write a Cookbook - here's a good opportunity to practice your culinary skills. I challenge you to cook for your family at least once a week (go for twice, ye are all well capable!). Record the recipes (they can be your own recipe) in your own cookbook. If you have access to a camera, take a photo of your dishes and either pint them out or send them to our class email ([email protected])
* Write a debate: " Traditional Schooling is More Beneficial to Children than Home-Schooling"
You, of course, can choose whether you ageee or disagree with this statement and write a convincing argument for your side.
Here's a link to a helpful article and video on how to write a debate/argumentative essay.
https://www.britishcouncil.sg/about/press/newsletter-articles/secondary-english/how-write-argumentative-essay-part-one
* Write your first novel!
Gaeilge:
1. Usáid do chuid Gaeilge! Please test yourself on all your verbs. Write out a list of the briathra we've covered and set yourself 20 briathra (as I do for your tests) to do each week. No cheating! Self correct when you've completed and try beat your score every week.
2. Watch 2 programs every week on TG4.
3. Have a look at this website and app. See how well you do!
https://www.duolingo.com/course/ga/en/Learn-Irish
SESE:
1. Project: The subject of your project is completely up to you. Pick something you're genuinely interested in and have two to three A4 pages (excluding pictures) ready to present when we get back to school. Make sure its all valuable and relevent info and not just pages and pages printed out from a website, you must be a picky editor!
Here's a few ideas :
- a country/city that interests you.
- an inventor or invention that you think has really benefited mankind
- an invention that you believe has been detrimental to mankind
- an historical era that interests you (Vikings/Famine times/ Plantation of Ireland/Stone Age etc)
- a person from history or living that interests you
These are only ideas, you probably have even better ideas yourselves.
PE:
It's really important to keep active during this time. Get outside in your garden every single day. Go for a walk with your family (do not meet your friends!). Puck around with your brother/sister/the wall!
There are plenty of trainers doing free online workouts at the moment. Joe Wicks is doing "PE with Joe" every day, so is Donna Dunne. Both are excellent and should challenge you (if you give it your all). You'll have to Google for the links I'm afraid.
I know this message seems very long but remember, it's suggested work for the next 4 weeks. Set aside an hour a day for the above and do it without your parents having to remind ( or mind!) you.
Most importantly, please keep yourselves and your families safe by following all the guidelines on Covid 19.
I look forward to seeing you all back at school, and that's the truth!
Ms. S. Meehan
