2nd Class ACTIVE WORK FROM HOME
Hi Boys & Girls,
Wow! What a school year you’ve had! When we said ‘Slán’ on March 12th last, we did not for one moment foresee that we would not be back together as a class for the rest of the year, or that we wouldn’t be celebrating your Communion Day together in May!
Although our time together was sadly interrupted this year, I must say that I really enjoyed being your teacher. We worked hard and had so much fun! You were kind to your classmates, had a smile for everyone and made the classroom such an enjoyable place to be.
Well done on all your efforts to keep up with your schoolwork at home! We really appreciate the time and effort that both children and parents put in during this time. You all did a spectacular job! Well done and thanks.
I hope you enjoy your last ‘Active’ week of this academic year. There are a selection of activities to choose from, do one or do them all! If you would like to share pictures on seesaw, with permission from parents, upload and I will share.
Enjoy the summer holidays and we look forward to having you back for 3rd class.
Take care,
Ms. Ní Bheacháin

Hi Everyone,
I hope you’re not too disappointed to see an end to academic work for this school year! You’ve all done such a great job with your school work over these last few months that we think you deserve to enjoy some fun activities for the last two weeks of school. There will be no lessons on seesaw this week, but if you would like to send in pictures of your activities feel free to do so and I can share with the rest of the class.
Take care,
Ms Ní Bheacháin

Hi Everyone,
I hope you’re all keeping safe and well. As we approach the end of the school year we would normally start reducing the workload from next week, and as such this will be our last full academic week. June is always such a fun month for children in school, so we are planning more active/creative/wellbeing based tasks for the last couple of weeks.
Work for the week ahead is outlined below, and as always is just a suggestion. I would also like to organise the collection of books from the school this week. I will send out an email about this on Monday and arrange a suitable time for everybody.
Take care and keep safe,
Emma Ní Bheacháin

Hi everyone,
I hope you’re all safe and well. Work for the week is listed below. As per previous weeks, all work is just a suggestion. Please note, there will be no work assigned for this Friday, or for next Monday and Tuesday due to planned school holiday closures. A well deserved break is on the way for you!
I’ve loved seeing all the fun and creative things you’ve all been up to during this time. You’ve sent some lovely pictures of your drawings, things you’ve baked, your lego constructions, gardening etc. This week, if you like, I would love if you could take a photo of something fun or creative you do during the week, then upload it on seesaw/email it, along with a little note to explain about what you’re doing/making etc. I will share them with your Rang 2 friends on seesaw.
I would also ask anyone who hasn’t emailed me previously to do so on [email protected]
Have a lovely long weekend with your family.

Hello everyone,
I hope you had a lovely weekend at home, that you’re all keeping safe and washing your hands. It was lovely to hear from you last week. Great work being done by children and parents, we know it is not easy!
This week I will begin to upload some work on the online learning platform Seesaw. If you see (seesaw) beside activities below, it means I go through these activities on seesaw. I will also upload worksheets to seesaw so children have the option to complete them on the app as I know it’s not always possible to print off worksheets. I will include a short video on seesaw explaining how this can be done.
I will send out each child’s individual learning code and instructions of how to set your child up on this learning platform. To do this I will need your personal email address. I would ask anyone who hasn’t emailed me previously to do so on [email protected]. I know this is new to us all so feel free to contact me if you require further support.
You will also see there is a ‘Kahoot’ quiz set for Irish on Friday. Kahoot is a game based learning platform. I’ve included a link which you can use, I’ll also post the link on seesaw, or alternatively download the app, click play and use the pin listed below. Again, any questions let me know.
Take care and keep safe,
Emma Ní Bheacháin

Hello everyone,
I hope you are all doing well and keeping yourselves safe. Hopefully you enjoyed a lovely Easter and ate LOTS of yummy eggs! You all deserve it!
I want to say to the children how proud I am of the great work you have all been doing; helping out at home and keeping up with your schoolwork as best you can! I know it’s not easy for you or for mams and dads, but remember you are all doing a great job! I really miss you all and hopefully we will back in school soon. You’ve had a little break from work over Easter but let’s get stuck back in from Monday.
Parents, as before, this work is optional but it would be important to continue to work on Maths, English and Irish as much as is possible. I have included a rough timetable to follow which may help. I have attached some additional worksheets you will find in the folder.
My email address is [email protected] please feel free to contact me with any questions/concerns etc. you may have.
I would really love to see some of the work the children are doing. Maybe the children might choose a piece of work a day that they are proud of, parents could take a picture of the work and email it to me.
They might be proud of their handwriting, their news, that they figured out a tricky math question, they drew a lovely picture, their Africa mindmaps etc. (As much as I’d love to see the children, please don’t include faces in the picture). This will allow me to see how the children are doing and facilitate feedback. Encourage children to continue to use their 2 stars and a wish (Two things I did well, one thing I’d like to improve on).
Most importantly for everyone – keep safe, keep healthy and stay positive.
Take care and see you all soon!

Hello everybody! I hope you are all safe and well and not missing school too much! I know we all feel rather strange being out of our normal routines and some children may be looking for some work to keep them occupied over the next fortnight. With that being said, I realise that everybody’s' circumstances are different and I don’t want to add pressure so don’t feel you HAVE to complete everything/anything. I am also aware of the limitations around wifi and access to devices, so again please don’t feel any pressure. Everything listed below are just suggestions for resources that are there to help you.
English
The Wild Explorers: Unit 14 ‘The How-to’ Guide to Being Eight.
Poem pg. 114: Homework! Oh, Homework!
Skills Book: Unit 14. Here you will find some pre/during and after reading activities, along with phonics <are><ear> and grammar <bossy verbs> activities.
Our new writing genre is procedural writing. During this time your child might have opportunities to engage in some fun baking activities at home. If they do, this may be a good time to practice their procedural writing in their English copy. Please use these headings,
1.Title,
2.Ingredients
3. What you will need
4. Method ( done out in points)
Example
How to Make Pancakes
Ingredients
- 1 cup flour
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1 cup milk
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- Whisk
- Bowl
- Frying Pan
- Spatula
- Plate
1. Mix the flour, sugar, salt and baking powder in a bowl. If you have a whisk, use it, and make sure the batter it is well mixed.
2. In another bowl, beat the egg then add the milk and oil. Mix until it is thoroughly combined.
3. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and whisk them together for about a minute. The mixture should be a bit lumpy.
4. Heat a blob of butter in a large frying pan.
5. Pour about a third of a cup of batter into the pan. If you want larger pancakes, pour more. For smaller pancakes pour less batter.
6. It will take about two minutes to cook the first side. You will know it is cooked when bubbles that will form on the top.
7. Flip it over and let it cook for a minute more. When the pancakes are golden brown, put them on a plate and enjoy.
Gill Explore have opened their website for free access to parents and students at the moment. This is the website that we as teachers use daily as we teach English. Please feel free to go to www.gillexplore.ie and go to the menu. Scroll down to products and all available books will be displayed. Choose primary titles/ English and 2nd Class to be directed to the skills book that we use.
If you choose unit 14 you can access the oral language and interactive resources for this story which would be beneficial for your children. Also, there is a wealth of resources linked with the story in both the differentiation section and the literacy stations section. Children could spend some time on completing some of the phonics, cloze, comprehension, grammar or extension activities. Talk to the children about all the new vocabulary and phrases and put them in sentences also.
To assist with oral language at this time you can go into unit 14 oral language poster. Discuss the poster and use all the tools available to zoom in, discuss what's happening, develop vocabulary etc. If you click on the question icon it will help you to direct questions to your child. This can be completed on a laptop or tablet.
Anybody who would like extra work in phonics or comprehension could also use some of the other titles belonging to Gill Explore also.
Also remember that free writing is also very beneficial to all children. If the children know what a full sentence is and where to use capital letters and full stops when they come back it would help them greatly. The children should remember how to write a narrative story and all practice is beneficial.
For fun: David Walliams is releasing a free children’s audio story every day. https://www.worldofdavidwalliams.com/elevenses/
Gaeilge
We didn't send home the children’s' Irish books but www.edcolearning.ie/login have also opened up their website to allow parents and children to access it. The user name is primaryedcobooks and the password is edco2020. This is the website that we use for Bua Na Cainte. The textbook and interactive activities are available to download but unfortunately only on a laptop/desktop. However, if on a tablet, you can still go into the resources section and you can see a lot of the vocabulary with pictures. Alternatively, www.gillexplore.ie also have published their Réalta Litriú textbook, along with lots of great table friendly interactive activities broken down by theme.
We were finishing the theme ‘éadaí’ (clothes). You could do the following conversation with your child:
Q: Cad atá ort? (What have you on you?)
A: Tá léine ghorm agus bróga dubha orm. (I have a blue shirt and black shoes on me.)
Q: An bhfuil geansaí ort? (Do you have a jumper on?)
A: Tá/Níl geansaí orm. (I do/don’t have a jumper on me.)
Q: Cén dath atá ar do gheansaí? (What colour is your jumper?)
A: Tá mo gheansaí glas. (My jumper is green.)
Q: Cé a thug an geansaí duit? ( who gave you the jumper?)
A: Thug .................. an geansaí dom . ( ..... gave me the jumper) or Cheannaigh mé an geansaí sa siopa éadaí. (I bought the jumper in the clothes shop.)
The children can also be encouraged to discuss ' An Nuacht' ( The News)
Example:Inniu an Luan ( Today is Monday etc)
Inné an Domhnach ( Yesterday was Sunday)
Amárach an Mháirt ( Tomorrow is Tuesday)
Tá an an aimsir go brea. Tá an ghrian ag taitneamh etc.
The next theme the children were due to start was ‘Sa Bhaile’ (At home). Any little bit of Gaeilge that you use throughout the day will help keep the language alive for the children. The children in 2nd class always make a fantastic effort in speaking the language with their friends. They may also be missing seeing their friends and might enjoy face timing their friends ‘as Gaeilge.’
Maths:
Folensonline have also apparently opened up their website but for some reason I could not access it. Perhaps others may have better luck. If you manage to get into it there is plenty of work in the satellite book for Planet Maths 2 that children could do up to what we have already covered. If you cannot access folensonline, gillexplore also have lost of options available. Tables Expert is a nice table friendly one. Again just go to www.gillexplore.ie select products on the right, and select 2nd class in the dropdown menu. You will be brought to the options available for 2nd class.
There is also a wealth of maths sheet available on twinkle that will cover topics that we have already covered in class. Also www.topmarks.co.uk have excellent online games for all age groups. We regularly use these in class to help with topics being covered.
For the last week we were working on time, but we didn’t finish the topic. Time can be tricky, we have been telling time in 15 minute intervals on an analogue clock. (o’clock, quarter past, half past and quarter to). It is very important for the children to remember that the short hand is the hour hand and the long hand is the minute hand. A great game on Topmarks is a game called ‘telling the time.’ Children are familiar with the game from their maths stations.
Any revision on quick addition, subtraction is also very beneficial to the children. Remember to keep up the Master Your Maths if possible.
SESE
For the coming fortnight it was also planned to learn about the theme of heat. How homes were heated long ago and how they are heated today, where heat comes from along with looking at weather in countries around the world. You might chat with the children about how your home is heated today and compare that to how people warmed their homes long ago. Perhaps the children could go on a hunt around the house and find objects that provide warmth. They could draw pictures and label them. Children might research what people in hot countries do to keep cool. What clothes do they wear? Do they stay out in the sun during the hottest points of the day? Should you wish to use it, you will find the Small World textbook for free on https://www.cjfallon.ie pg.63-66
Music
Don't forget to practice the recorder also as the children have picked up so much this year it would be a shame to forget it all.
If I could also ask that children don't go ahead in their books or reader unless we have said to as this could be very disruptive when we get back to school. We will advise you as time passes.
Keep reading reading reading.....it is always beneficial. ( Worldbookonline is free to all at the moment too)
Again, everything above, are only suggestions for you. Do what you feel you can and enjoy and learn in the outdoors too.
I will guide you further as to where to go from here.
Keep safe everybody and we hope to see you really soon.
