Sixth Class 2020/21
October/November Newsletter
This year is very different to us because we are not allowed to leave our classroom to do jobs. We have to sanitize, stick to our pods and we are getting used to spending more time cleaning. On the bright side we are back together as a class and we are enjoying being 6th class, and we are looking forward to our last year in primary school.
We had a lovely day for our Confirmation; it was smaller than usual but we all really enjoyed it. Since the start of October we have been saying a decade of the Rosary a day. Ms Doyle asked us to make our own rosary beads out of homemade materials, all our Rosary beads were great but the overall winner was Ciara who made her rosary beads out of acorns. A big thank you to Ms Doyle who challenged us.
Mr. Gleeson the principal of Johnstown visited us since we couldn’t go to the school and the Pobail Scoil Zoom called us.
We dressed up in our black and amber for Kilkenny Day. Everyone was dressed brilliantly.
In art we did Optical Illusions and Pointillism by Georges Seurat which is dotted painting .Our art displays look really well!
Recently we did the Freshford Loop. We went into Brown’s Woods and came out in Ballylarkin, and then we walked back to school on the road. On the way we collected some leaves to do a small project on trees in school. It took us an hour and a half to walk the seven kilometres. We wore wellies because it was very slippy in parts. After the walk Mrs. Bolger organised a Kahoot quiz to test how well we were listening.
We are also trying to run around Europe!! This entaiols running laps around the basketball court and counting how many we do, then we check where we got to. The farthest away challenge is Russia and we have reached Italy so far [we need 709km more to get to Russia].
Over the summer Caoimhe welcomed a baby brother and Cian, and Ellie and Teagan all had baby cousins.
We are very glad to be back at school.

March 2020
On the 27th and the 28th of February, 6th class did a Science Fair in the school hall. Every group performed an excellent experiment. There were experiments such as Pepper and Water, Baking Soda and Vinegar, Slime and Oobleck, Fire Vacuum, Egg in a Bottle, Lava Lamp, Invisible Ink and a Balance Station. Bridges made by 5th class out of recycled materials were also on display.
An artist called Rachel Burke came to our class to do an Art Workshop with us. It was based on a project she did on the Rural Farming Community. We drew pictures of somewhere or something that reminds us of the countryside. She came back the next day and we drew self portraits.
Before Christmas our class did a bake sale in the school hall. We all baked something for the Bake Sale. All the classes came down to the hall to buy a tasty treat. We are very grateful for everyone's donations. In total we raised 375 euro. All money was donated to the Bóthar charity. The gifts we bought were two water filtration systems, two bee hives and one flock of chickens which will be given to families in need in 3rd World Countries.
For Engineering Week we did a Bricks4Kidz workshop. The whole school went down to the hall to build lego .We built Big Rig which is a truck. The facilitators were very helpful when we were stuck. The truck was battery powered and most people were finished it in time .We had lots of fun.
On Friday 6th March, the whole school dressed up in denim. We all brought in a donation for dementia, our class alone raised over 100 euro! A total of €500 was raised overall. In the afternoon our class looked up the Alzheimer's research website and learned a lot of things we didn’t know about dementia.
A few people from our class competed in the Canice's Credit Union Quiz. Tadhg, Ruby, Aiobhinn and Darragh took part in the quiz. Cian, as our sub, was a great sport. Our principal and teachers helped us all the way. The questions were hard but they got through it in the end. They may not have come 1st but they tried their hardest and came 12th out of 82 teams.
We are all doing great preparation for our Ceremony of Light which will take place on Wednesday 11th March. We have been going to the church to practice every day. We have a lot of jobs to do during the ceremony such as readings, recorder introductions and bringing up of candles. We also have to perfect our hymns.
