Prechool Lachtaín
Preschool Lachtaín
Preschool Lachtaín, our Early Intervention Unit for preschool children with ASD opened in September 2013. This unit caters for children from three to five years of age who are diagnosed on the autism spectrum. Each class caters for up to six children and is staffed by one class teacher and two special needs assistants. Since September 2021, there are now three classes in the preschool. Each child will follow individual education plans which will cater to his/her individual needs. Children in the unit will remain with us for approximately two years before advancing to their local mainstream school or to an ASD unit attached to a mainstream school
This is the only Early Intervention ASD preschool in County Kilkenny. School transport is provided for qualifying pupils. Once an assessment of ASD is made, parents can apply to our school for enrolment.
In September 2019, we moved into our new, state of the art building which comprises of two large classrooms, each with it's own withdrawal room, where the children can enjoy one-to-one teaching time or a quiet break, if necessary. We have a Para-Ed Room, equipped with a large ball pool. Next door is our Sensory Room with projector, sound bar, bubble tube and specialist lighting. We have a multipurpose hall where the children can expend a lot of energy and have fun together.

October/November Newsletter
Preschool 1
We are all very happy to be back at school here in Preschool 1. We welcomed three new children to our class in August; Jayden, Fionn and Callum. Everyone has settled in really well and are enjoying their new school.
We have been very busy since we started back to school. We were very excited to see our new play frame out in the court yard and we have lots of fun spinning in the egg cup and playing on the frame.
We had a very busy term with birthday parties. We had 5 children; Elise, Fionn, Callum, Bella and Mason, all celebrating their birthday’s between September and November. We will have to wait until May now for Jayden’s birthday for our next birthday celebration but I’m sure we’ll find an excuse between now and then to have a party or two.
We have enjoyed lots of stories. One of our favourites was the story of the Three Little pigs, and we used props and puppets to tell the story.
We did lots of art work including painting, Halloween decorations and we recently decorated a winter hat and mittens with colourful fabric. We all enjoyed dressing up for Halloween, we went out to yard and strutted our stuff in the Halloween parade for the whole school.
Two weeks ago for science week we played with magnets and checked different items to see if they ‘stuck’ to the magnet or not and we also took part in a zoom class which taught us how to make bubbles and interesting ways in which we could blow bubbles.
Time is flying and soon we will be getting ready for Christmas and although we won’t have our usual Christmas carol performance for our parents we will still get in to the Christmas spirit, learn our Christmas songs and record it for our families at home. That’s all from us.
Preschool 2
The last few months have been very exciting for us here in Preschool 2. We welcomed two new
children to our class, Finn and Aleya, and they are settling in well. We all love relaxing in the sensory
room and playing outside and in the hall.
We all loved the rhyme Humpty Dumpty and we were very busy sequencing pictures, colouring and
making a wall for Humpty Dumpty out of playdough. We also loved putting Humpty Dumpty back
together for art. We are all really enjoying the story Goldilocks and the three bears and are learning
lots of language from the story. During Science Week, we loved doing a floating and sinking experiment.

Spring Newsletter 2020
Preschool 1
We have had a busy and exciting term so far. We have been learning all about spring and animals on the farm. We have enjoyed doing daffodil art and making lambs. We enjoyed the story ‘A Squash and Squeeze’ on World Book Day which tied in nicely with our theme. We also made bookmarks. We went on nature walks to look out for some signs of spring. We really liked decorating pancakes for Pancake Tuesday! We have been joining up with Preschool 2 every Wednesday morning for P.E. where the boys and girls are having lots of fun. We had fun making constructions for STEM week using modelling clay and match sticks.
Preschool 2
We have been very busy here in PS2. We have been learning all about spring. We enjoy going on our morning walk and made daffodils for art. We have been learning all about animals and their babies and we even washed some animals during water play. We loved the rhyme Little Bo Peep and made sheep for art.
We are enjoying the story ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ and love when the giant says ‘Fee, Fi, Fo, Fum’. We love construction play making shapes, buildings, and numbers, and sometimes even making our names using Jenga blocks. We loved our STEM activity, making different shapes with modelling clay and match sticks.
Have a lovely St. Patrick’s weekend everybody!
