Green Schools Campaign
Our Green Schools Campaign
‘Clean Our World, Clean Our Space, Let’s All Recycle All Our Waste!’
Our application was in!! After more than two years work we completed our application for the school’s first Green Flag. We hoped to hear if our application was successful in the spring.
Throughout the year, the work continued as we aimed to further reduce the amount of litter and waste produced by the school community. We asked all parents to help us with this by reducing the amount of packaging in their child’s lunchbox and also where possible using reusable drinks containers.
We also hoped to increase our intake of healthy foods, particularly fruit and vegetables. We saw a big increase last year during the Food Dudes campaign and we hoped to continue this as we all really enjoyed it and had lots of energy from all those vitamins and minerals!! Bringing fruit and vegetables for lunch also helped us to increase our compost collection as all our skins and cores could be composted and used to fertilise our garden!
Green Schools Visit:
February 11th Bernadette Maloney from Kilkenny County Council visited the school for our Green Schools Assessment Visit. She spoke with the Green Schools Committee about the work which has been done in Scoil Lachtaín to reduce litter and waste. She also spoke to a number of classes about how all the students have been involved in the Green Schools campaign. Bernadette was very impressed to see firsthand the changes that have been made to make our school a more environmentally friendly place. She was very complimentary of our beautiful school garden.
Bernadette was most impressed by the enthusiasm and commitment of the pupils, staff and parents of Scoil Lachtaín. The committee really did a great job informing her about our Green Schools Programme and demonstrated great knowledge of and commitment to our efforts to become a greener school!
We raised our first Green Flag on the 31st May. Lots of people joined us in our celebration. We all worked very for the Green Flag. When the flag was passing us we all did the Mexican wave. After it we all had cake for all our hard work.
A special note of gratitude is extended to all members of our Green School Litter and Waste Committee. They worked tirelessly in order to achieve this fantastic award. We are now working towards our second Green Flag, the theme of which is energy.
We are looking forward to the challenge!
