FRIENDSHIP WEEK 2021
Due to the school closure this year, we never got to mark Friendship week in February. We therefore decided that last week would be an ideal week to celebrate all our friendships within the school. As I'm sure you have been hearing, all classes got out in the lovely summer sunshine and spent some quality fun times with their friends. There were many sightings of children around Freshford during the week on their travels. Some children went to the woods, more went on the Freshford Loop Walk, others were in Millenium Park having fun, playing games and having a picnic, while others visited the Fire Station. All these outdoor activities culminated in the children having pizza on Friday afternoon lovingly made by Kelly and her Mam, Pat...what a way to end Friendship Week. All of the children loved being outdoors with their friends and the hope is that the children will make lasting positive friendships for life from St. Lachtain's N.S.

Traditional Catholic Prayer to Saint Brigid
Saint Brigid. You were a woman of peace. You brought harmony where there was conflict. You brought light to the darkness. You brought hope to the downcast. May the mantle of your peace cover those who are troubled and anxious, and may peace be firmly rooted in our hearts and in our world. Inspire us to act justly and to reverence all God has made. Brigid you were a voice for the wounded and the weary. Strengthen what is weak within us. Calm us into a quietness that heals and listens. May we grow each day into greater wholeness in mind, body and spirit. Amen. |
Week beginning January 25th
As we begin a new week, I'd just like to say a big hello to all the girls and boys. I hope you're all safe and well. You have been working so hard over the last two and a half weeks. Your teachers are very proud and pleased with the way that you have engaged with remote/online learning using Seesaw. They have enjoyed reading, correcting and commenting on your work. Keep it up! I hope you're getting plenty of fresh air also which is very important.
I'd love to see some photos of the birds visiting your gardens. The sparrows are very busy building nests above the chutes in our house at the moment, and there's a little robin that visits every day. (Sometimes he brings me stories of the boys and girls in our school!) He's a right little chatterbox!!
Send your photos to [email protected]
Remember: Be sure to get your parents' permission
To our parents, I'd like to say THANK YOU for all the work you're putting in. It's a very, very difficult time for all of us. I hope you're finding Seesaw reasonably user friendly. I've uploaded some tutorials to help you and these can be accessed by pressing the button below. Please keep in touch. Email addresses are on the Contacts Page of the website.
This week we celebrate Catholic Schools Week 2021 and this year's theme is:
Catholic Schools - Communities of Faith and Resilience
Each day this week, we'll place a Thought for the Day here on the Homepage. You might like to share this with your family.

Covid 19 School Closure - January 2021
Dear Parents/ Guardians,
Welcome back to the new term. I hope you're all well and safe, and that you had a nice Christmas overall. Dear Parents/ Guardians,
Welcome back to the new term. I hope you're all well and safe, and that you had a nice Christmas overall. Once again, in order to protect each other, we are forced to return to blended, online teaching and learning. The majority of you are very familiar with the format used and the manner in which it is organised:-
- weekly work posted here on our website at the beginning of each week
- Seesaw - Seesaw is a platform for student engagement. Teachers can empower students to create, reflect, share, and collaborate. Students “show what they know” using photos, videos, drawings, text, PDFs, and links. It’s simple to get student work in one place and share with teacher/each other, and nothing is shared without teacher approval. You should, by now, have returned your consent form to your child's class teacher. A copy of the consent letter is attached below if you still need to do so.
seesaw_gdpr_parent_consent_letter.pdf |
- Special Education Teachers (SET) and Special Needs Assistants (SNAs) will work with class teachers to support, as far as possible, the children in their groups.
- Parents have direct access by email to class teachers, SET and school management throughout the school day. Please keep in touch and if you have any questions, queries or problems, please email the relevant member of staff during school hours and we'll endeavour to get back to you as soon as possible.
We hope to see you all back in school as soon as possible. In the meantime, please take care of yourselves and stay well.
Kind regards,
Brendan Tynan

Christmas Art Competition 2020 Many of the students participated in this year's Christmas Art Competition which was a great success. It created a festive buzz around the school with lots of chat as to who would be the final winners!!! All the art work has been displayed in the hall for everyone to see and has brightened up the place immensely. The Student Council took their judging duties on with gusto and voted anonymously. It truly was an extremely difficult task. All the entries were amazing and we are so proud of all the children. Well done to all the participants and especially to all the finalists. It's great to see that artistic talent is alive and well in our school Well done to all our winners. |

Rang 6 End of Year Graduation Plan
Unfortunately, current Covid 19 restrictions prohibit us from bringing the community together to celebrate our Rang 6 Graduation Ceremony before end of term. This is a key event in the lives of our Sixth Class boys and girls, their teachers and especially you, their parents, as they celebrate their eight years in Scoil Lachtaín and make preparations for beginning their new lives as students in secondary education. The following is our plan to mark this very important milestone:
Phase One
End of term
Phase Two
In autumn term (when feasible), invite R6 and your families back for Graduation Evening

Communion Day Greetings
Our boys and girls were due to make their First Holy Communion today. We are thinking of you all in a special way this week. We know you were so looking forward to making your First Communion, and although the plans have changed, as plans sometimes do..... your special day will come and it will be great! We'll celebrate with you all at a later date!
Until then, we hope this fun Kahoot quiz of some of the teachers and SNAs on their Communion Day will bring a smile to your faces.
Can you guess all 17?

Mental Health and Well-being
We are aware that this is a difficult time for all children and the children in St Lachtain's are no different. During these challenging times, it’s more important than ever to look after your child’s well-being. To help parents to help their children, Outside the Box has produced a FREE activity journal (At Home with Weaving Well-being) to help children to enhance their mental well-being through a range of activities. It can be accessed at www.otb.ie/wwb-home/ . It’s probably most suitable for children aged 8 to 12 years old but can certainly be adapted for younger or older children. You can download it and print it out for your child/children or, if you don’t have access to a printer, your child can get the activity idea from the screen and do it on a blank sheet of paper.
Most of the topics in the FREE journal, such as positivity, gratitude, kindness, bravery, creativity and self-kindness, are drawn from the field of Positive Psychology, which is the science of well-being. There are also activities based on dealing with worries and coping with change The journal aims to give children a chance to reflect and express themselves, gradually building into a highly personal portfolio reflecting unique aspects of their mental well-being. Once complete, they may enjoy looking over it again from time to time, especially whenever they need a well-being boost! As a parent, you can use this journal to open up an important channel of communication with your child. Take time to discuss the various activities while they are completing them and perhaps even join in and try some of them on yourself.

Hi Boys and Girls,
Hope you're all keeping well and your teachers tell me that you are getting your work completed. Well done. Not always easy to settle down to work and also it may be difficult to have a laptop or phone available. Don' t worry. Just do your best as you always do. Make sure you get plenty of fresh air with the weather being so good. I go for a walk every day and I can't believe the number of birds that I can see and listen to singing. I'm trying to learn how to identify the bird from listening to the song it's singing. I'm getting better at it but have much to learn. I'm also really into trying to name some of the wild flowers and plants in the ditches and fields.
I'd love you to join me in this project.
We've set up a new page for you, our budding new scientists to join in . Tap the button labelled 'Science Club' at the end of this page (or go to the tab labelled MORE at the top of this page and scroll down to a new page called SCIENCE CLUB). We'll give you links to web pages that will help you identifying birds and plants. Each week, we'll also paste up some nice experiments for you to try out at home.
You can email your photos of wild flowers, birds in your garden area, and your experiments to share on our Science Club page, with you parents permission. Looking forward to hearing from you.
Keep safe, happy and well.
